E. coli outbreak update

E. coli update

Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health continues to investigate five confirmed cases of E. coli 0157 and 35 probable cases connected with the University of Guelph.

Dr. Nicola Mercer, Medical Officer of Health (A) says "We have not determined the origin of the E. coli but we are investigating romaine lettuce as the possible source.  The Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) have been examining possible links with suppliers and distributors."

Raw fruits and vegetables are just as susceptible to the E. coli bacteria as meat products. Washing fresh produce to be used in salads and garnishes is the best defence against bacteria, but it doesn't always get rid of it.

"We have expanded our investigation to all of Wellington and Dufferin counties," continues Mercer.  "If you are currently experiencing any symptoms, get medical attention immediately and contact Public Health."

If you are a resident of or a visitor to Wellington or Dufferin counties and have had:
